Hiking guide for Jeju's must-visit Seongsan Ilchulbong

Rising majestically from the emerald waters of the East China Sea Seongsan Ilchulbong or Sunrise Peak is undoubtedly the most iconic natural landmark on Jeju Island. Formed about 5,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption under the shallow sea this tuff cone is so geologically unique that it has been designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Its name Seongsan means Fortress Hill referring to the massive rock formation that resembles a giant crown. At the summit you are greeted by a vast crater surrounded by 99 jagged rocks making it feel like you have stepped into a prehistoric world. To experience the peak at its most magical you must arrive well before dawn. Check the local sunrise time and aim to start your ascent at least 40 minutes in advance. The hike consists of steep wooden stairs and takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on your pace. As the first rays of light break over the horizon painting the sea in hues of gold and crimson you will understand why this spot is considered the ultimate sunrise location in Korea. The entrance fee is 5,000 KRW for adults for the summit trail while the surrounding coastal walking paths are accessible for free. Please note that the peak trail is closed on the first Monday of every month for maintenance. Getting here is simple with express buses running from Jeju City and Seogwipo directly to the park entrance. Since the ocean wind at the summit can be incredibly piercing especially in the early morning wearing a windbreaker is a smart choice. After your hike treat yourself to a warm bowl of abalone porridge at a nearby local restaurant to complete your perfect Jeju morning.
