Recommended times and ways to get to the best views
To witness the most dramatic panorama of Seouls sparkling city lights your journey must lead you to the summit of Namsan Seoul Tower.
Perched atop Namsan Mountain this iconic tower was originally built in 1969 as South Koreas first integrated radio broadcast tower. Today it stands as a symbol of the city and a beloved destination for couples who leave colorful padlocks on the fences to signify their eternal love.
Namsan has held historical importance since the Joseon Dynasty serving as a natural guardian for the capital city. Near the base of the tower you can still find the ancient Beacon Mounds which were used to signal national emergencies. The contrast between these historic stone structures and the futuristic tower perfectly captures the essence of Seoul.
For the ultimate experience I recommend reaching the observation deck at least 30 minutes before sunset. Watching the city transition from a golden orange glow to a sea of neon lights is truly unforgettable. The total cost including the cable car ride and the observatory ticket is roughly 25,000 KRW per person but the view is worth every won.
Access to the tower by private car is restricted to protect the environment so you should take a yellow shuttle bus from Myeongdong or Chungmuro Station. Alternatively you can enjoy a scenic ride on the Namsan Cable Car. If you are feeling active a 30-minute hike up the wooden stairs from the Namsan Library is a great way to enjoy the fresh air. Be sure to bring an extra layer of clothing as the summit is often much windier and cooler than the city streets below.
