The most romantic way to enjoy the island within an island

Just a short 15-minute ferry ride from Seongsanpo Port on the eastern tip of Jeju lies Udo Island a place shaped like a reclining cow and filled with cinematic natural beauty. Historically Udo was established as a state-run horse pasture during the Joseon Dynasty and today it stands as a preserved ecological paradise. Because the island is mostly flat it is the perfect destination for a leisurely bicycle tour. Cycling the entire 17-kilometer coastline takes about 2 to 3 hours allowing you to stop whenever you see a breathtaking view or a charming seaside cafe. The must-visit spots on your route include Seobinbaeksa Beach famous for its rare white coral sand and the dramatic black sand of Geommmulle Beach. For a bit of adventure take a jet boat ride at Geommmulle to see the hidden sea caves and the majestic cliffs from the water. Before heading back make sure to try the legendary Udo peanut ice cream made with locally grown peanuts that have a distinctively rich and savory flavor. To beat the afternoon heat and the crowds I highly recommend catching the earliest ferry around 9:00 AM. A round-trip ferry ticket costs approximately 10,000 KRW for adults and bicycle rentals are widely available near the piers for about 10,000 to 20,000 KRW. Getting to the ferry terminals is easy by bus or car from Seogwipo or Jeju City. Keep in mind that ferry operations depend entirely on weather conditions so always check the forecast before heading to the port. Wearing a hat and plenty of sunscreen is essential during the summer months but the cool ocean breeze will keep you refreshed as you peddle through some of the most beautiful scenery in South Korea.
